Reporting to the Vice President, Chief Underwriter, the Director leads underwriting specialists and translates Canada Life’s philosophy into consistent outcomes. The role balances speed, judgment, trust, and risk appetite while supporting complex decisions. Success requires advanced medical, financial, and non-medical risk assessment, guideline expertise, and cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead, coach, and develop underwriting specialists
Oversee co-signs, consultations, escalations, and complex matters
Strengthen practice through reviews, audits, and claims outcomes
Reduce avoidable evidence, referrals, and rework
Implement policy and guideline changes with training
Requirements:
Significant individual life underwriting experience
Proven people leadership and change leadership experience
Knowledge of guidelines, authorities, treaties, and risk governance
Experience with automation, rules engines, or digital applications
Excellent communication and cross-functional influencing skills
Shape defensible life underwriting decisions through specialist leadership, risk governance, data insight, and trusted stakeholder communication.
