Personal Support Worker
Quilt, Inc.
Description
About the Clients:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an elderly couple in their early 80s living in Aurora. Both parents experienced strokes in 2024 and require varying levels of support. The father has speech difficulties (aphasia) but good comprehension, while dealing with chronic back pain. The mother has significant cognitive challenges including aphasia, difficulty with comprehension and memory, and takes anti-psychotic medication. She recently had hip surgery and struggles with medication adherence. Both parents are fiercely independent and initially resistant to accepting help, so patience and a gentle approach are essential. They maintain a meticulously clean bungalow and take great pride in their home.
Responsibilities:
Medication management and reminders, with special focus on ensuring the mother takes her anti-psychotic medication consistently
Meal planning support and preparation guidance, including defrosting proteins and encouraging balanced nutrition with adequate fiber and hydration
Light meal prep assistance to ensure proper nutrition throughout the day
Monitoring food and water intake
General companionship and emotional support
Light housekeeping as needed (laundry, linens)
Assistance with activities of daily living as required
What We're Looking For:
Experienced PSW with a proven track record working with clients who have cognitive impairments and aphasia
Exceptional patience and ability to work with resistant or challenging clients
Strong communication skills and ability to speak slowly and clearly, repeating information as needed
Experience managing behavioral challenges and mood fluctuations
Ability to build trust gradually with clients who are skeptical of outside help
Reliable, consistent, and punctual
Understanding of stroke recovery and cognitive decline
Schedule:
