BJ Energy Solutions | Clairmont, Alberta | Full-time | 16 days on / 12 days off | Field-Based
Help Power the Technology Behind TITAN™
As a PowerGen Technician, you will operate, inspect, commission, maintain, troubleshoot and repair BJ Energy Solutions’ portable natural-gas generator systems and associated power-distribution equipment. Working at remote field locations, you will help deliver dependable power to support hydraulic fracturing operations.
This is a hands-on, cross-disciplinary opportunity for someone with a strong foundation in mechanical systems or electrical, electronic and controls technology who wants to develop skills across both disciplines. You will work with Operations, Maintenance and technical support teams to diagnose problems, restore equipment availability and improve reliability.
What You Will Work On
Portable natural-gas engine-generator sets, including fuel-gas, ignition, air-intake, lubrication, cooling and starting/charging systems
Generators, alternators, three-phase generation and distribution systems, including 480-volt equipment
Generator controls, synchronization, paralleling, load sharing and equipment protection systems
Switchgear, breakers, power cabling, grounding and bonding
Sensors, instrumentation, electronic controls, telemetry, alarms and remote-monitoring systems
What You Will Do
Inspect, operate and monitor portable natural-gas generator systems during pre-start checks, startup, synchronization, loading, normal operation and shutdown.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on natural-gas engines, generator sets and associated mechanical equipment.
Troubleshoot engine performance, electrical controls, communication faults, alarms, sensors and instrumentation using operating data, technical drawings and approved diagnostic tools.
Inspect and service fuel, air, cooling, lubrication, ignition, charging and supporting systems; complete authorized component replacements, adjustments and post-repair checks.
Support inspections and fault diagnosis of generator controls, protection devices, switchgear and three-phase distribution systems, including 480-volt systems, within your qualifications and authorization.
Respond to field breakdowns and work with Operations, Maintenance, vendors and technical support to return equipment to service safely.
Verify equipment readiness, operating parameters, alarms and performance; identify developing issues before they lead to unplanned downtime.
Read electrical one-lines, wiring diagrams, schematics, mechanical drawings, equipment manuals and electronic service information.
Complete accurate inspection reports, operating logs, maintenance records, test results and follow-up work orders.
Follow BJ Energy’s hazard assessment, energy isolation, lockout/tagout and electrical safe-work procedures, escalating regulated or specialized work to appropriately qualified personnel.
What You Bring — Required
Practical training or experience in at least one relevant area: power generation, heavy equipment or industrial mechanics, electrical/electronics, instrumentation, automation or controls.
A solid technical foundation in mechanical or electrical/electronic systems, with the interest and ability to cross-train in the complementary discipline.
Hands-on troubleshooting ability and sound judgement when using diagnostic tools within your training and authorization.
Ability to interpret relevant technical information and use operating data to identify faults and recommend corrective action.
Strong problem-solving, documentation and teamwork skills, with the ability to work independently in remote field settings after required training and evaluation.
Valid driver’s licence and acceptable driving record; ability to meet field travel, physical and PPE requirements and work a 16/12 rotation, including days, nights, weekends or holidays as required.
Experience That Would Be an Asset
Three or more years of relevant field-service or industrial maintenance experience.
Journeyperson certification (such as Heavy Equipment Technician, Electrician, or Instrumentation Technician), a two-year technical diploma, OEM technician training, military power-generation training or equivalent experience.
Experience with natural-gas engines, generator sets, mobile/industrial power equipment or hydraulic fracturing operations.
Knowledge of generator synchronization, paralleling, load sharing, protective controls, 480-volt power distribution or switchgear.
Experience with telemetry, PLCs/controls, industrial communications, instrumentation, preventive maintenance and root-cause troubleshooting.
This field-based position follows a 16 days on / 12 days off rotation and may involve day or night coverage, weekends, holidays, outdoor work and travel between fleet locations.
