Why This Role Matters
This role offers something unique: time to improve the work before fully taking it over. From now until May 31, 2027, you'll work alongside the current incumbent to learn the payroll cycle while assessing how we use UKG, reducing duplication and administration, and putting practical improvements in place.
On June 1, 2027, you'll take primary accountability for payroll delivery and continue as our UKG Super User and subject matter expert, with the authority to lead system optimization, set data and process standards, and recommend broader changes. This is a hands-on role with real decision-making, where you'll be the go-to expert for Finance, People & Culture, managers, and employees.
What You Will Do
Payroll & Benefits Administration & Compliance
Administer, process, and audit bi-weekly payroll for 600+ employees, including earnings, deductions, pension contributions, and statutory remittances.
Prepare ROEs and final pay, and lead year-end processes, reporting, and audits.
Coordinate benefits, pension, onboarding, and offboarding administration in partnership with People & Culture.
Ensure compliance with payroll legislation and policy while delivering exceptional service to employees.
Serve as the Association's primary UKG Super User and subject matter expert across Payroll and People & Culture.
Lead configuration, testing, and optimization of UKG Payroll, HRIS, Workforce Management, Time & Attendance, and Scheduling.
Identify and implement improvements such as automation, better reporting, less duplication, and stronger self-service, and recommend larger changes when needed.
Training, Partnerships & Advisory Support
Build strong relationships and act as a trusted advisor to employees, managers, Finance, and People & Culture.
Provide training, tools, and ongoing support on payroll, workforce management, and HRIS processes.
Build reports and dashboards that turn payroll and workforce data into clear insights for budgeting, planning, and decision-making.
Prepare payroll journal entries and support reconciliations, month-end, and audit documentation.
What you bring
Payroll Expertise
Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation through the National Payroll Institute, or working toward it; Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) is a strong asset.
Three to five years of progressive payroll and benefits experience, ideally in a multi-location or nonprofit organization with 500+ employees.
UKG experience is required; system administration, configuration, reporting, or super user experience is a strong asset.
Experience with pension, year-end, audits, and statutory reporting, plus advanced knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, CRA, Employment Standards, and WorkSafeBC requirements.
A track record of taking initiative, leading projects, and successfully implementing process improvements.
A passion for using technology to improve efficiency, accuracy, and the employee experience, and for staying current on legislation and system changes.
Relationship Building & Communication
Excellent communication, relationship-building, and customer service skills, with experience training and coaching managers and employees.
Sound judgment and discretion with confidential and sensitive information.
Who You Are
Detail-oriented and committed to accuracy, compliance, and great service.
A natural problem solver who enjoys improving processes and using technology to create efficiencies.
A proactive self-starter who sees opportunities and takes action.
A trusted partner and confident communicator, eager to become our UKG and payroll expert.
