Watco’s Student Conductor position develops the skills needed to support switch crews and customer-driven railcar movements. You will learn procedures through directions, observation, and practice, then apply judgment while handling signals, switching orders, locomotive inspections, and crew communications. The role requires following safety rules and completing shift paperwork.
Key Responsibilities:
Learn switching procedures from managers and peer trainers
Interpret orders and communicate instructions by radio
Observe track conditions and locomotive operating signals
Assist crews with switches, car movements, and inspections
Record car numbers, origins, destinations, and cargo
Requirements:
High school or GED equivalent required
Must be 18 years old or older
Valid driver's license required
Ability to obtain Conductor Certification within required timeframe
Willingness to pursue locomotive engineer certification afterward
Become a Watco Student Conductor while gaining supervised experience with railcar switching, locomotive signals, safety procedures, and operational records.
