Job opportunity
Junior Civil Engineer
Candu Energy Inc.
Job Description Overview
This role provides engineering support and technical accountability for nuclear civil/structural engineering, including reinforced concrete, steel, supports, anchorage, seismic qualification, ageing management and containment-related structures. The incumbent works within a licensed Canadian nuclear environment where nuclear safety, quality, configuration management, human performance and conservative engineering decision-making are fundamental.
Your role
Perform engineering tasks under the supervision and responsibility of a licensed Professional Engineer, including calculations, data review, drawings, specifications and field support. Learn and correctly apply station procedures, design-basis documents, codes, standards, configuration-management and nuclear quality requirements. Participate in field walkdowns, design reviews, technical meetings and resolution of straightforward engineering issues. Maintain accurate records, identify uncertainties, seek timely guidance and incorporate checking comments. Develop the competencies required for future P.Eng. licensure and progressively assume more complex assignments.
Demonstrated working knowledge appropriate to level in nuclear civil/structural engineering, including reinforced concrete, steel, supports, anchorage, seismic qualification, ageing management and containment-related structures. Understand the station design and licensing basis and apply the governing code edition/addenda, station procedures and approved engineering processes rather than assuming the newest published standard automatically governs. Working knowledge, as applicable, of CNSC expectations; CSA nuclear standards such as N285, N286, N287, N289, N290 and N299; and ASME BPVC requirements. Apply nuclear quality assurance, design verification, configuration management, operating experience, ageing management, equipment qualification, human factors and commissioning principles as applicable. Work effectively with operations, maintenance, construction, commissioning, suppliers, quality and authorized‑inspection interfaces in a high‑reliability environment.
Education, experience and PEO requirements
Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline acceptable for progression toward licensure with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or an equivalent academic pathway recognized by PEO. Normally 0-3 years of relevant experience; nuclear, power‑generation, heavy‑industry, co‑op or project experience is an asset. Engineering work is performed under appropriate P.Eng. supervision until licensed; active development toward PEO licensure is expected. Strong written communication, analytical discipline, willingness to seek guidance and commitment to nuclear safety culture.
PEO minimum licensing context
As of July 1, 2026, PEO requires applicants for P.Eng. licensure to demonstrate the prescribed academic, experience/competency, National Professional Practice Examination and good‑character requirements. The minimum time component for eligible engineering experience is 24 months, but applicants must still demonstrate PEO's required competencies. This job description does not replace PEO's current licensing rules.
